A Chorus at Dawn: Nature’s Greatest Concert

|

I awake to the harmony of early-morning birdsong. As I lay still and listen, I feel a spiritual connection. It’s as if nature’s captivating tune soars into my heart, carrying this message of reassurance: “God is here. He sees you. You have nothing to dread.”

Tranquility and peace cover me like a cozy blanket. I smile and scramble out of bed, ready to meet the day.

Later in the day, wondering if I’m growing a bit dotty in my senior years, I research the symbolism of birds in the Bible. I learn birds often serve as signs of hope and freedom in scripture. They are associated with joy and God’s presence, and the bird’s song represents praise and worship.

I also learned something else about God’s birds. Hundreds of them across the world perform a dawn chorus daily in the springtime.

Not an early riser? You may wonder why nature’s greatest concert happens so early. This timing is part of God’s master design, and here’s why: Birdsong sounds best in the still morning air because it travels farther, and background noise is minimal. The dawning of a new day triggers testosterone in male birds, enhancing their mating calls.

What’s more, abundant bird life creates abundant plant life. Birdsong creates vibrations in the soil, positively affecting nutrients, plant roots, and the aeration of the earthworms. The bird’s song shows the interconnectedness of God’s creation, reminding us that we depend on each other to sustain life.

The melody of the dawn chorus also plays a role in biblical prophecy. The singing birds signify the coming of a “new dawn”—the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Isn’t God’s attention to details amazing?

Dawn Chorus Day is a worldwide celebration taking place on the first Sunday of May. That falls on this coming Sunday, May 4. About an hour before sunrise, early risers around the world will be greeted by birdsong as dawn breaks. Mark your calendars, and rise with the robins to celebrate this amazing holiday.

Make this a time of devotion, and turn your hearts toward God, joining creation in praising Him with joyful song. Conclude the concert by reading Psalm 148:7-13.
